In the summer of 1999, I presented
an international "Artists Invite Artists" workshop at the Watershed
Center for Ceramic Arts in Newcastle, Maine. The idea of the workshop,
the International Multimedia Symposium, was to invite an group of distinguished
painters and sculptors to come and work with clay for a couple of weeks.
Of the six artists chosen, three were American, one Portuguese, one Venezuelan
and one English. We also assembled an excellent group of assistants from
around the country to help facilitate the program. With grants from the
National Endowment for the Arts and the Maine Arts Council, we spent a
lively two weeks making work and talking art. The symposium culminated with
a panel discussion of all the participants that was presented to the public.
