This series of stirrup pots were produced in the mid-1990s as a result of my interest in the Moche culture of Peru. As my work became more sculpural in form, I was struggling on how to maintain the construct of the vessel within the new form language I was exploring. The pre-columbian Moche vessels were my door in, as these amazing pots solved the problem of merging pure sculptural form with both utilitarian and functional needs. This series only lasted about six months, but was instrumental in setting the stage for the vases and larger vessels that would follow.
